If you begin to train your puppy right from the get-go, you will be proud to have a well behaved, loyal companion as they grow older. Failure to teach them the proper way to act around people and other dogs will result in problems for everyone. Dogs need a pack leader to tell them what to do; it’s ingrained into them. Try these 6 basic puppy obedience tips:

1. Use the Same Commands

You’ll need to have a few commands up your sleeve to get your dog to do what you want it to do. These may include:

  • Sit.
  • Stay.
  • Roll over.
  • Lie down.
  • No.
  • Fetch.

The key is to make sure you keep the commands for certain behaviours short and sweet. Make sure you keep them the same, and be consistent with them in order for them to work. Be assertive when you give them, but don’t scream or shout. Just be dominant.

2. Use Treats to Reinforce Good Behaviour

If your puppy is doing what you’re telling them to do, you can reinforce this behaviour with treats and positive affirmations. Say ‘good boy’, and give them a fuss, for example. This helps them to associate doing what you say with treats, and eventually you won’t need to give them a treat for them to do what you tell them.

3. Have Them Walk Next to You at All Times

When walking with your dog, make sure they are next to you at all times. This should make sure that they don’t start pulling on the lead, and trying to tell you where they want to go. Your dog should be following you. They should stop when you stop. If they don’t, it’s because they think they’re the pack leader. Having them walk next to you or behind you consistently will teach them their place in the pack.

4. Don’t Let Them Nibble You or Your Clothes

Puppies have a tendency to nibble on clothes, ears, hands, etc. Although this may only be gentle, you need to stop this right away. They should be taught that this is not acceptable, otherwise they could do it much harder to someone much younger at some point. Give them a firm, ‘no!’, and stop playing with them if they do this. Simply put them down and ignore them for a moment. Do this every time they start nibbling to show them that this behaviour does not get rewarded.

5. Give Them Toys to Chew

If you don’t give them toys to chew, they’ll end up finding something much more expensive to play with. You’ll then end up shouting at them or getting cross with them, but it really isn’t their fault. They need stimulation of some kind. Make sure you’re buying them appropriate toys and teaching them that they must play with those instead.

6. Always Greet Them Last

Upon entering the house, it can be tempting to greet the dog first. After all, they’ll more than likely run up to you and start greeting you. However, this makes them believe that they are the most important one in the house. Greet other members of the house first, before greeting your dog. Make sure it’s a calm greeting too, otherwise they can get over excited every time you come home, and anxious when you leave.

Use these 6 tips and your puppy will be loyal and obedient without fail!
